Sports
Dannevirke High School encourages student involvement in sport and participation levels are higher than most schools. The great majority of students represent their school in Secondary School competitions and inter-school fixtures. Most sport is played either in Dannevirke or the Manawatu.
Teams are fielded in:
Basketball, Cricket, Hockey, Netball, Rugby, Soccer, Swimming, Athletics, Cross Country, Tennis, Canoe Polo, Squash
Students also have the opportunity to enter tournaments in:
Canoeing, Cycling, Equestrian, Golf and Triathalon events.
Students have the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh programme.
The school is fortunate in having a Multi Sport Committee and Advisory Boards supporting sport in the school (details below).
Cricket
All new players are welcome. Teams play in the Manawatu Competition on Saturday mornings during the summer months with games being played in both Dannevirke and Palmerston North.
Fees are set at the beginning of each season and must be paid before the season starts.
The uniform is the normal Cricket uniform (whites), which students provide themselves.
Parents/caregivers are encouraged to help out in any way they can.
Advisory Board Meetings are held once a month with the Annual Meeting being held in March of each year.
Hockey
Girls and Boys wishing to play Hockey for Dannevirke High School are asked to put their names forward in February so teams can be worked out.
Fees are set at the beginning of each season and must be paid before the season starts.
Uniforms are supplied to students wishing to play.
The Annual Meeting of the Hockey Advisory Board is held in February of each year and is advertised, plus there are monthly meetings during the playing season which parents/caregivers are urged to attend.
Netball
Girls wishing to play Netball for Dannevirke High School are advised of the following:
All uniforms are supplied by the Advisory Board with a hireage cost to students.
Fees are set at the beginning of each season and must be paid before the season starts.
Parents/caregivers are urged to attend meetings during the Netball season to help with running school Netball.
Soccer
Fees are set at the beginning of each season and must be paid before the season starts. These can be paid in two installments if required. Subscriptions must be paid before the season starts.
All uniform items are supplied by the Advisory Board apart from shorts and socks which are the responsibility of the player.
The season lasts for 14-17 weeks with the first game played the first Saturday in April.
50% of games are played at Dannevirke High School with the remained traveling to another centre.
Parents/caregivers are urged to support their children in this chosen sport.
Rugby
All uniform items are supplied by the Advisory Board apart from shorts and socks which are the responsibility of the player.
Fees are set at the beginning of each season and must be paid before the season starts.
Meetings are held on a regular basis during the rugby season and parents/caregivers are urged to attend.
Basketball
An Advisory Board runs Basketball for boys and girls. Depending on the team played for, travel costs are incurred with a subscription being set at the beginning of each season and must be paid before the season starts.
Athletics
There are no subscriptions for Athletics. Students are selected for tournaments and pay on a user pays basis.
The uniform for Athletics is a Blue Dannevirke High School athletic singlet (supplied by the school) and black shorts, which students are required to supply.
Meetings are held as the school's athletics programme requires.
Tennis
Tennis is available to those students who are interested in playing competitively, as well as socially. If travel is incurred petrol costs have to be met by the students playing.

Dannevirke High School strives to help each student develop and maintain sporting interests. |

All students are encouraged to participate in sport, be it of a team or individual nature, competition or non-competitive. |

As wide a range of sports as possible will be offered at Dannevirke High School to provide students with an opportunity to: - develop their skills and aptitudes - build on skills acquired in the Physical Education programme - develop their awareness and responsibility for 'fair play' - enjoy experiences of group membership, loyalty, self discipline and opportunities for leadership and responsibility - compete in inter-school inter-changes and competitions - compete at the highest level - generally develop life skills through involvement, participation or simply an interest in sport |
