High Life

High Life

8th March 2010
(by Dave Murdoch)

Already we are more than halfway through the term as it finishes on April First with the start of Easter. It seems to have roared by with swimming and athletics taking up two days and teachers are racing to keep up with their NCEA programmes. Interim reports are being prepared for delivery in week seven.

I begin to wonder how much learning these days is confined to the classroom because there seems to be a terrific variety of field trips and outdoors work. The computer suites are flat out as well, as students seek information from an even wider world through the internet.

Last week the year tens had a very interesting visit to Lund’s wetland. Science HOD Mrs. de Villiers reported that the classes showed real curiosity and a willingness to muck in.

A day later twenty five year twelve students went to Taupo on a geography field trip for three days. They had a great time and I thoroughly enjoyed the company of a great bunch of teenagers. And so did the Taupo businesses with whom they came in contact. (I am not just talking about shopping either.)

We visited two huge Landcorp farm properties on the first day looking at sheep and deer farming and all the uses land is being put to near Taupo including a new geothermal power station, the Taupo bypass(both well on their way to completion), sewerage disposal, industry and recreation.

Visits to the opening of the Aratiatia Rapids, Huka Falls, Lava Glass, the Honey Hive(not welcoming at all!), the Prawn Farm, and the usual amazing hospitality from the Gibsons at Orakei Korako made up day two, and we even found time for a talk on tourism.

Day three saw us head south through Turangi and the Tongariro Power project to Whakapapa Ski Field where we rode the lifts and heard a talk on developments. The new restaurant will be great.

Then it was south again to the Earnslaw One owned Kariori Forest and a trip to a logging site before travelling home. Class time this week was spent writing up the findings.

Some of the group were just back in time to play cricket on Saturday. Through the enthusiasm of Mrs. Menzies, Dannevirke High has been able to field three teams this season and all played at Ongly Park in Palmerston North. The thirds had a very good win against Hato Paora with a major contribution from Thomas Kuggeline with the bat of 56, while the seconds had a draw against Feilding White despite an eighty not out by Sam Raffaeilli, their game being curtailed because our firsts needed the wicket. The firsts had Palmerston North Cricket Club on the ropes at 80 for 8 but let the last batsmen get a further 50 and we fell short by about that margin. The firsts play Feilding High School Firsts in a Gillette Cup game on Wednesday.

Others were occupied on Saturday and Sunday morning doing a First Aid Course with Mr. Te Huki. They learnt all the basic first aid skills including CPR and injury care and as a result they earned four level two NCEA credits, as well as the confidence to act in an emergency. There was another course the previous weekend.
Two days later and the year eleven geographers were off to Napier to learn about the 1931 Hawkes Bay earthquake. With news of the Chilean tsunami threat still fresh, it was a very interesting day with most of the time being spent at the Hawkes Bay Museum exhibit. As usual our students were a credit to the school, a point made by the education officer.

Tuesday’s assembly featured cricket reports, two power-point presentations featuring the latest EBS theme of keeping left(in the corridors) and the amazing work of Donald Bradford which got him accepted for design school.

The three thousand metres was run as a preliminary event for athletics on Wednesday at lunchtime with a good number turning out for house points.

Thursday, it was the turn of the year eleven Agriculture students to finish the Health and Safety Course started last week.

You don’t have to travel far to experience the world beyond the classroom. Mr. Hanton’s social studies class studying how ancient man lived tried to cook on an open fire. Unable to get two sticks to create a spark they had to resort to matches but the fires did prove hot enough to cook sausages with out digestive consequences later.
