International Student Newsletter
March 2009
Another year has started. In fact, we are more than half way through the first term.
At Dannevirke High School we have a small group of International Students, all of whom are fully integrated into and part of, the larger school community. Although all of our International Students receive specialist English as a Second Language tuition, they also attend regular classes of English, Mathematics, Science and other “optional” subjects. This interaction ensures they are readily accepted, learn English very quickly and get involved with all the experiences and activities available if they wish to.
Because we are small in number, the students get individualised help and guidance while they are with us. We pride ourselves on being a caring school, within a very caring community. Many people within our community have asked the school if they could host International Students. The International Students here at Dannevirke High School are seen by both school and community as worthy young people and it is testament to this, that many of our Dannevirke people wish to welcome them into their homes.
All of our International Students do well, both in their academic studies and personal growth. In 2008, all of our senior International Students passed their relevant National Certificate of Education Achievement (NCEA) levels. This means a 100% success rate. As well, one of our senior International Students was awarded Dux of Dannevirke High School in 2008. This student also passed two Scholarship examinations she sat at the end of her Year 13 year. Our 2008 Year 13 International Students are all continuing with tertiary studies in their chosen fields.
Each holiday period we give our International Students experiences away from Dannevirke. This year we are planning to take them on farm visits, beach rambles, laser force games, ten pin bowling, and lots of shopping, (shopping, and more shopping – they seem to enjoy this the most!) Later on in the year, there will also be an overnight trip away to see a different part of the country. These outings are times when both staff and students get to know one another well and further establish us as a great group to belong to.
