Fundamental Rules





FUNDAMENTAL DANNEVIRKE HIGH SCHOOL RULES

1. Students shall be deemed to be under the authority of Dannevirke High School while:

i. Present at Dannevirke High School during an official school day.

ii. Representing Dannevirke High School at any time, or on any official trip or function, whether it be sport cultural pursuit or any other activity, and whether or not a parent or caregiver is also present.  

iii. On the way to or from Dannevirke High School during an official school day or for any other purpose referred to in (ii) above unless the student on such occasion is in the care of a parent or caregiver.  



2. Prohibition on Drugs and Alcohol

No student shall consume, sell, purchase, supply or have in his/her possession illegal or non-prescription drugs, solvents or alcohol while under the authority of Dannevirke High School.   



3. Prohibition on Drugs and Alcohol  

No student shall smoke tobacco, supply to another or have tobacco in his/her possession while under the authority of Dannevirke High School.



4. UNITED/EBS

Dannevirke High School operates within a philosophy of EBS, based on a set of behavioural expectations which are taught and reinforced within the curriculum.

The fundamental principles within this are:
i.    Respect for oneself
ii.   Respect for others
iii.  Respect for property 



5. Truancy

Students are required to attend school on each official school day for the whole day.  Any absence must be an absence recognised by the school as valid and have the approval of the student's parent or caregiver.  Valid absences may include: illness, absence for bereavements, doctor or dentist appointments.  




BASIC DANNEVIRKE HIGH SCHOOL RULES



1. Uniforms and Personal Appearance  

It is important that students take a pride in their personal appearance and to that end must comply with the uniform requirements stated in the Prospectus.  Students are required to be neat and tidy and clean at all times.

1.1 The only jewellery, which is allowed to be worn, is a wristwatch and/or a plain ring.  Students may wear one plain ear stud or sleeper in each ear, with no other body piercing/body jewellery to be visible.  

1.2 'Make-up' and nail polish is not permitted.  Long fingernails are not permitted.  

1.3 Guidelines as to permitted hair length and style will be provided annually.  Complete and correct school uniform is to be worn.  Students are to carry a uniform pass, which is issued by the Deputy Principal or an Assistant Principal if a non-regulation item is worn.  A pass will be issued if a satisfactory note, explaining the wearing of a non-regulation item, is brought to school.  

1.4 Boys are to be clean shaven. 



2. School Property/Environment

2.1 Students are not to damage or vandalise school property.  This includes school buildings, equipment, trees, etc. 

2.2 Students must report any damage to the Deputy Principal 

2.3 Students must not drop litter or write graffiti 

2.4 Students must not play ball games other than on school playing fields or courts or in the gymnasium 

2.5 Students will pay for damage to school property caused by carelessness. 



3. Personal Property

3.1 Students must take responsibility for their own personal property.  Personal clothing and property must be named.  

3.2 All property belonging to another person or to the school is to be respected.  

3.3 Students may not bring cassettes, radios, portable cassette/CD players or other electronic equipment to school without permission. 

3.4 Students are not to bring large sums of money to school.  Students are able to leave money at the school office for safe keeping. 

3.5 Students must report to the Deputy Principal any lost or stolen property 



4. Behaviour

4.1 Students are to behave in a courteous manner at all times 

4.2 Students are not to verbally abuse or physically abuse or intimidate any member of the school community 

4.3 Violence of any kind be it physical, verbal or psychological towards any person within the school is forbidden 

4.4 The possession of any weapon or item that can be deemed to be a threat to student or staff safety is forbidden. 

4.5 Students are not to eat food in classrooms or corridors unless given teacher permission 

4.6 Students are not to chew gum. 



5. Attendance

5.1 Students are to attend school each official school day. 

5.2 Students absent for more than half a day must bring a note from their parents/caregivers the first day on return to school.  Such a note is to be dated, detail the reason for absence, give the date and/or time of absence and be signed by a parent/caregiver.  

5.3 Students required to visit the doctor or dentist during the day must bring a note giving parent/caregiver approval the day of the appointment.  This is given to the Tutor at Tutor Group time.  A leave card will be issued.

5.4 Students may not take time off school for hair appointments. 

5.5 Students must be punctual to classes and Tutor Group. 



6. Leaving the School Grounds

6.1 Students are required to remain in the school grounds throughout the school day.

6.2 Students who go home for lunch regularly must obtain a Lunch Pass.  A note from parents/caregivers is needed before a Lunch Pass is issued.  A Lunch Pass gives approval for the student to have lunch at his/her own home.  

6.3 Notes from parents/caregivers are also necessary if lunch is being taken at a friend's house.  A separate note is to be brought each time for casual arrangements.  

6.4 Students are not allowed to leave school unless a pass has been issued by the Tutor, Deputy Principal or an Assistant Principal



7.
Motor Vehicles


7.1
Year 12 and 13 students may bring a car or motorbike to school with Deputy Principal approval.  The Deputy Principal will give approval if he is satisfied the student has a valid reason for bringing a vehicle. 

7.2
Approval is given to the named student only.  Passengers (unless approved by the Deputy Principal and parent/caregiver) may not be carried.  Pillion-riding on motorbikes is not permitted.

7.3
Vehicles may not be moved during the school day

7.4
Offences against traffic regulations may result in the removal of the right to bring the vehicle to school.



8.
Bus Students


8.1
Students may not leave buses en route, to or from school, without permission of the Bus Controller.

8.2
Conduct on buses will be the same standard as in school.

8.3
Complete uniforms are to be worn on buses.

8.4
Students must wait for buses at the appropriate place and in an orderly manner.



9.
Illness or Accident


9.1
Injured students must report to the school office.  If during class time the teacher will send injured students to the office.

9.2
Students feeling ill must report to the school office.  If during class time the teacher's permission must be obtained before the student reports to the office.

9.3
Students are not permitted to go home without reporting their illness or injury to the school office.

9.4
Students are not to contact parents/caregivers regarding illness without first notifying the school office.

9.5
If a student is sent home a normal absence note is required on return to school

9.6
Students may only use the sickbays with the permission of office staff



10.
Messages/Visitors


10.1
Messages to students will only be delivered in case of emergency (e.g. illness, accident)

10.2
Students may use the phone at the school office at morning interval and lunchtime with the permission of a staff member.

10.3
Visitors to the school must report to the school office.  Visitors are not permitted to visit classrooms unless approved by the Principal



11.
Out of Bounds


11.1

The following areas are out of bounds unless directed to that area by a staff member:
a.    the bottom field (at all times)
b.    Ranfurly/Wright Street (morning interval and lunchtime)
c.    the railway lines (at all times)
d.    The glasshouse and school garden (at all times)
e.    the north side of the Gym and the area between the Gym and Allen Street road
       frontage


11.2
The following areas may only be used if a staff member is present or has given permission:
a.    the swimming pool and gymnasium
b.    the information technology suites room
c.    the music room
d.    any other specialist teaching rooms, including laboratories, workshops and home
       science rooms

11.3
Students are not to use the administration block corridor unless asked to

11.4
Students are not to call at the staffroom unless requested, and are asked to use the stairs at the Hall end of the Administration Block.
