The opportunity to participate in these exams is used by students who want depth in their understanding of Music concepts.
Choir is made up of enthusiastic singers who want to extend their singing ability in a large group. Special events and ceremonies have used the Choir for musical interludes and are well received in the community. The Big Sing competition has been an encouraging event for the school to compete with Merit.
Talent Quest is a well anticipated night where students of the school and wider community to cometogetherfor a night of entertainment put on by the musicians of the school. There are various trophies competed for which have historic value and mana attached to them.
It is considered a highlight of the year and always has surprises and special moments as a Showcase of student talent.
Smoke Free Rockquest
Since 1997 Dannevirke High School has entered bands into the regional annual contest where they have competed well with other schools. A win in 1997 and 2013 were highlights to the many placings the school has achieved over the years. Students get to play against their peers and strive hard to win the coveted title of 'Best Band'. Individuals have excelled also with Jordan Gray and Elijah Graham winning the special musicianship prize to vie for a $4,000.00 Scholarship for further music study.
A small group of musicians on various instruments have featured over the years depending on instruments available and skilled players.
Chances to perform have been at assemblies, community invitations and Prizegivings. With talented international students arriving each year a new opportunity to have these students lead in the band allows younger players to be brought in and supported.
This is an enthusiastic group of players who enjoy playing together and developing performance skills on this quirky instrument. It is the opportunity to link with others and learn a skill in a non-threatening environment and just have fun.
Itinerant Instrumental Lessons
These lessons are offered to all students at Dannevirke High School as enrichment to learning an extra instrument. They are offered on the Piano; Guitar; Drumkit' Vocals; Brass and Windwood. Students are scheduled for specific times out of class to develop skills with individual lessons with specialist teachers.
A keen cohort of students, teachers and parents join together every two years to present a musical show for the community. It attracts students who want to extend their acting and singing skills. The result is always satisfying and the chance to be in a big performance has its memories and special times between the members.
Shows of the past have been: Bugsy; Feathers to Fly;' Jesus Christ Superstar; Back to the Eighties; Wolfstock; Meant to Be; School Rox to name a few.
This vibrant event allows the students to put together an 8 minute dramatic sequence of dance and drama to tell a story of significance. Dannevirke High School has been well placed in this competition with students and staff working extremely hard together to produce a memorable presentation.
