Respect, Responsibility, Resilience

It is important to note that Staff is a key factor in running effective and consistent behavior management in our school. Their role will allow the Deans in collaboration with Curriculum Leaders to work effectively on dealing with issues that may arise.

We are a PB4L school and we follow restorative practices.

Major Incidents (Seriously affecting the Wellbeing of Teachers and Students)

  • Refer to Senior Leadership Team (Principal, DP & APs) – Contact Kay Hewitt by phone, email or send a student to the office with a summary of the incident immediately. Teachers must write a summary of incident and sign/ date it, separately from Kamar

Minor Incidents

  • When an incident occurs in the classroom, the classroom teacher will use their professional judgment to determine the nature of the incident (Major or Minor)
  • The teacher will initiate communication with the student to resolve the issue based on restorative practice principles. The incident is recorded on Kamar and home contact is made as required.
  • If the issue is not resolved, the teacher will determine the nature of the issue (Academic or Behavioural):
    • If the issue is predominantly academic, Curriculum Leader (CL) will be contacted through Kamar. CL will follow up to resolve the issue (Deans are included in this communication as this is key to the required collaborative approach). Actively notify the CL on Kamar – ensure the notification tab is activated).
    • If the issue is predominantly Behavioural, the student’s Dean will be contacted through Kamar. The Dean will follow up to resolve the issue (CL can be included in this communication as this is key to the required collaborative approach). Actively notify the Dean on Kamar – ensure notification tab is activated).


​​​​​​​Unresolved Academic Issue

  • If the CL could not resolve the issue between the teacher and the student using restorative practice principles and contacting home, then the issue is referred to the Deputy Principal - Curriculum. All communications are recorded on Kamar.
  • If not resolved at this level, the issue is then referred to the Principal. Contact Kay Hewitt by phone or email immediately. Teachers must write a summary of the incident and sign/ date it, separately from Kamar.

Unresolved Behavioural Issue

  • If the Dean could not resolve the issue between the teacher and the student using restorative practice principles and contacting home, then the issue is referred to the Assistant Principal - Pastoral. All communications are recorded on Kamar.
  • If not resolved at this level, the issue is then referred to the Principal. Contact Kay Hewitt by phone or email immediately. Teachers must write a summary of the incident and sign/ date it, separately from Kamar.

Learning at DHS takes place in a culturally responsive and relational learning environment:

All students are present in class actively engaged with their learning. This means that:

  1. The teacher is ultimately responsible for the behavior in the classroom.
  2. Create a tuakana-teina atmosphere – peer mentoring amongst learners in groups and peers in class.
  3. Students are not to be removed from class for minor events.
  4. All incidents are to be entered into Kamar as soon as possible.
  5. Student names are to be spelled and pronounced correctly.
  6. Be proactive and praise positive behavior.
  7. Contacting home builds relational capital between school and whanau.

Referring Students to Health Nurse

Referrals are done in two ways:

  • By Deans; Deans will email Health Nurses on their emails (Donna and Dionne) Dionne.brown@midcentraldhb.govt.nz ; donna.milner@midcentraldhb.govt.nz. Referrals will be done with the student’s consent and/or parents’ consent.
  • The Health Nurse will pick up students from classes with the help of the office.
  • The Health Nurse will email the Deans confirming student’s attendance.
  • In the office, there is a book where students voluntarily put their names down to make an appointment with the Health Nurse. The Health Nurse will check this booklet first thing when they arrive at DHS and take a copy of the names.
  • Referrals are made by SLT and Deans or when students voluntarily request it from the office.
  • Teachers concerned with students’ health need to pass information onto the relevant Dean for a referral.
