MATARIKI FESTIVAL

Matariki Festival 2025 – A Celebration of New Beginnings

Ka mahuta a Matariki i te pae, ka mahuta ō tātou tūmanako ki te tau.
When Matariki rises above the horizon, our aspirations rise for the year ahead.

This whakataukī beautifully captures the spirit of Matariki — a time for reflection, renewal and setting new goals for the year to come. It reminds us that with the rising of Matariki, we are offered fresh opportunities for growth, hope and connection both within our kura, whānau and community.

On Thursday 19 June 2025, Dannevirke High School came together to celebrate Matariki after a term of preparation and practice. Each of our school houses took to the stage to perform waiata with pride and passion, filling the hall with manawanui, incredible wairua and house spirit.

Our wharekai team prepared an incredible hāngī and boil-up, which was enjoyed by students and staff — a true celebration of kai and kotahitanga. The day concluded with a moving performance from our Kapa Haka rōpū, whose waiata brought the festival to a powerful close as ākonga departed for the long weekend to celebrate Matariki with their whānau.

A huge ngā mihi nui to everyone who helped make the day so special — from those who prepared the kai, performed on stage, and supported from the audience, to our wonderful guest judges and whānau who joined us in celebration. It was a day filled with pride and aroha.
