THE MEAD CENTRE

The Mead Centre empowers students with diverse learning needs by blending functional academics, life skills, physical activity and social-emotional growth. Through inclusive programmes such as swimming, Riding for the Disabled and the Special Olympics, students develop confidence, community connection and emotional resilience.

The Mead Centre fosters the holistic growth of each student by academically, physically, emotionally and socially, by providing enriching experiences that build self-worth, independence and a lifelong sense of belonging to their community and prepare them for life after school.

Key Learning Areas:

  • Functional Literacy & Numeracy Lessons include reading and writing and math to support students’ overall ability to understand and practically problem-solve.

  • Social & Emotional Development Students develop empathy, cooperation and self-expression through group projects, peer mentoring and role-play.

  • Physical & Recreational Activities

    • Swimming: Improves motor coordination, fitness and self-esteem through weekly aquatic sessions tailored to students' needs.

    • Riding for the Disabled: Equine-assisted activities that foster balance, core strength, responsibility and emotional connection.

    • Special Olympics: Students participate in adapted sports events, promoting goal setting, teamwork and personal achievement.

    • Daily exercise: Students have choices of activities they participate in. Some enjoy meditation, chair pilates, walking, hockey, shooting goals and more.

    • Technology: Students participate in cooking and produce quality food they like to eat. Students are involved in budgeting and shopping for their ingredients. Students also can learn carpentry skills and take home their projects.

  • Daily Living & Vocational Skills Cooking, personal hygiene routines, basic job tasks to prepare students for real-world challenges.

  • Transition Planning & Independence Focuses on setting long-term goals, exploring vocational options, and building self-advocacy. Students are supported by agencies while at school and to transition from school.
