CONSTRUCTION ACADEMY

Dannevirke High School Construction Academy

The Construction Academy at Dannevirke High School is delivered in partnership with AGC Training for Industry and is now in its third successful year. This programme teaches and strengthens skills that are valuable across most trade industries. It’s not only designed for ākonga aspiring to become builders but also supports those interested in various trades or other fields where these transferable skills are beneficial. Additionally, the academy provides an excellent opportunity for rangatahi to explore whether a trade career truly interests them.

Admission to the academy requires students to apply and attend an interview, with the programme selecting up to 12 students annually. Throughout the year, ākonga earn up to 45 NCEA Level 3 Unit Standard credits while working two days a week on building a two-bedroom home.

The two-bedroom home project gives ākonga the chance to develop and refine their skills. They receive instruction and assessment in areas such as Health and Safety, tool use, wall framing, working with trusses, working at heights, applying adhesives and sealants and installing windows. Ākonga take great pride in their work, finding it rewarding to step back and see the home they have built ready for someone to live in.
