Nau mai, haere mai, welcome to English!
At Dannevirke High School, our English department is made up of passionate and dedicated teachers who believe in the power of language to positively shape lives and allow us to explore the world around us. We don’t just teach English – we inspire students to become confident communicators, thoughtful readers and creative thinkers.
Through the study of English, students gain the essential literacy skills they need to succeed – not just in the classroom, but in the real world. Whether it's analysing a powerful piece of writing, delivering a persuasive speech or crafting their own creative work, students are challenged to think critically, communicate effectively and engage meaningfully with the world around them on both a local, national and global level.
English is a compulsory core subject at Dannevirke High School from Year 9 to Year 12 and becomes an optional – but popular – subject in Year 13. Our programmes cover a wide range of texts, from the timeless works of Shakespeare to modern authors from Aotearoa, as well as film and visual text analysis. Students read, write, speak, listen, view and present to build skills that are essential for life beyond high school.
At the heart of our English curriculum is a belief in the power of language to connect, empower and transform. Come and discover your voice with us.
Tōku reo tōku ohooho, tōku reo tōku māpihi maurea.
My language is my awakening, my language is my treasure.
