Puhoro Programme
Puhoro was launched in 2016 in response to the low representation of Māori in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The Puhoro program provides regular interaction with students through one period per week sessions on-site at Dannevirke High School. The sessions encompass various aspects, including Kaihautu sessions which focus on developing 21st century skills, Tuakiri sessions that promote Māori identity and knowledge (Matauranga Maori) and academic tutorials facilitated by dedicated tutors.
We currently have 17 students participating in 2025 from year 11 and 12 cohorts. One day per term they are taken on a course in Palmerston North to participate in a variety of challenges. It is also an opportunity to mix with other schools during the day.
