Kaiārahi
The Kaiārahi (guide and mentor) is essential in nurturing and supporting our ākonga’s learning journey.
Key responsibilities:
To be a consistent presence for ākonga, providing guidance and support throughout the day as needed.
To assist in restorative processes, helping ākonga return to class as smoothly and promptly as possible.
Create a welcoming and inclusive environment where ākonga feel comfortable sharing and reflecting. The space is also treated with respect and honesty.
Manaakitanga is outward-looking, focusing on the needs of others to provide equitable outcomes for all.
Key Tasks:
A significant part of the role is to provide manaakitanga (support and care) to ākonga who may be struggling emotionally, socially, or academically.
To be present and listen in the space, allowing students to talk openly and explore options to improve.
Support healing conversations between ākonga and staff to rebuild trust and foster a positive environment.
Support attendance and follow up with ākonga and whānau in an empathetic manner if needed.
As Kaiārahi also assists the ākonga to be prepared and ready for school:
Uniform – uniform bank. General presentation - hair ties...
Resources – pens, paper, books.
Kai- wharekai
Use our Student Management System to log student visits and the reason(s) for their visit.
Maintain regular communication with Year level Deans.
Update the Pastoral Team with the relevant information so appropriate support can be arranged.
