Dannevirke High School is committed to:
Valuing and protecting the school day as a time for students to engage with teaching and learning
Encouraging our students to be actively involved with each other and in the wider life of the school
Developing the self-confidence and resilience required to minimise dependency upon social media
Fostering face to face connection and a sense of belonging in our school community
GUIDELINES:
With these as our desired outcomes, there are now guidelines in place around the use of all electronic transmitting devices, including mobile phones and watches by Dannevirke High School students during the school day so these devices to not interfere with school life. These guidelines are to be observed between 8:45am and 3:05pm on any school day, as well as special school events outside regular school hours (such as Prizegiving etc).
Mobile phones are to be kept at home, in lockers or in school bags, not carried on the person (i.e. not in pockets or blazers).
Mobile phones brought to school will be set to flight mode or on silent (with no vibration) during the school day. All smart watches are considered an extension of a smart phone, and must be set to flight mode, silent or ‘do not disturb’ for the school day hours specified above.
Mobile phones are not to be visible during the school day, unless by a specific request or permission from a teacher.
CONSEQUENCES
Should a mobile phone be visible during the school day, in contravention of these guidelines, there will be the following consequences:
Mobile phone is confiscated and returned under the following conditions:
1st offence - Parent/caregiver only can pick it up at their convenience after 3:30 pm of the day of confiscation.
2nd offence - Parent/caregiver only may pick it up at their convenience after 3:30 pm after 5 school days following the confiscation.
3rd offence - The student will be barred from having a cell phone at school
Teachers will be instructed to confiscate mobile phones if the above conditions are breached and a refusal by a student to hand over a mobile phone will be dealt with by members of the Senior Leadership Team
Notes:
If there is an urgent need for communication that cannot wait until the end of the school day, students and parents/caregivers can make contact through the Main School Office.
All breaches will be logged on the students’ file in KAMAR.
Exceptions will be considered on a case by case basis for medical reasons only.
The responsibility of implanting this policy lies on all parties, community, parents/caregivers, teachers, students and Senior Leadership Team.
There are many social, emotional and academic benefits to be realised for our students from restrictions around mobile phone access during the school day. We look forward to the support of our wider community to establish these expectations at Dannevirke High School.
