Mathematics is about thinking creatively, critically, and logically, structuring, organising and solving problems. It is also about communicating. Students learn to create models, look for patterns, make predictions, estimations and calculations. Many employers look for skills such as these in their employees.
We aim to help students develop their mathematical understanding, grow in confidence in their thinking, and extend their logic and problem-solving strategies.
The dedicated Mathematics Department teaching staff hope that our student will enjoy Maths and feel confident to use their numeracy skills in a wide variety of situations.
We do this by:
Creating a supportive learning environment. Our mantra is "It’s OK to get things wrong – that’s how we learn!"
Encouraging effective thought and action.
Facilitating shared learning - Talking, working in groups, games, activities
Making connections to prior learning.
Providing sufficient opportunities for individuals to learn.
Extending gifted and talented Students.
At Dannevirke High School, Mathematics is compulsory from Year 9 to Year 11. While it is optional for students at Year 12 and 13 to take Mathematics, most students do continue on with this subject, aware that it will enhance their employment opportunities or strengthen their chances of getting into various tertiary courses.
