GUIDANCE COUNSELLOR

Kia ora, I’m Lisa Higginson, the Guidance Counsellor here at Dannevirke High School. I began my journey at DHS in 2003 as a young adult and have proudly been part of this community ever since. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of watching many students grow into adulthood and now, some of their children are students here too.

I’ve lived in the Dannevirke community for 22 years and raised my family here. During this time, I’ve also worked in primary education, gaining a deeper understanding of our community and our ākonga. These experiences have strengthened my commitment to supporting the wellbeing of our young people as they navigate their teenage years.

I am currently studying toward a Postgraduate Diploma in Guidance and Counselling something I dreamed of pursuing early in my teaching career, though the timing wasn’t right until now.

I’m passionate about ensuring that students have somewhere safe and welcoming within the school where they can access support. I love talking with teenagers and helping them work through the unique challenges they face. My approach is grounded in empathy, connection, and the belief that every student has the strength and potential to move forward in a positive direction.

It’s a privilege to walk alongside them.
